This listing is for 1 each SS-AU7 and 1 each SS-AL5 Short version: Just power off, plug them in, and do the cal procedure for your meter – that’s it! Long version: The genesis of this project was frustration in trying to select a viable set of tubes for my prime bench VTVM.In the days of active production of these meters, a boundless supply of inexpensive replacement tubes existed from a wide range of suppliers, and one re-tubed the meter annually whether it needed it or not, using tubes make <60 days from installation. Certain mfr's, inclusive of no less than Triplett and Hickok, specified WHICH brand of tubes to use, and how to select+age suitable candidates for best accuracy and performance. We no longer have that option. Sure, NOS are still available, but 50-odd years on, that tiny bit of migrated gas which is inconsequential in audio work, can really gakk up an electrometer. Alternatively, new Russian or Chinese 12AU7s work, but their contact (thermionic) potential tends to be higher than "original" specimins, and that makes balancing the circuit touchy, and can often bleed a small potential back to the circuit under test. Nevertheless, this basic meter design enjoyed a 35 year active production life in at least 10 countries and many dozen models, which speaks volumes about the utility of these instruments - unmet by any current offerings, so definitely worth future-proofing. Yet, being spoilt by lab-grade intrumentation in connection with my day job, VTVM zero-drift has always been a minor irritant for me, as well as wandering AC contact-potential of the tube diodes for AC measurements. Regarding the latter, surely it must bother others beside me, as Kyoritsu (private-labelled for Micronta + Olson and others, excellent VTVMs) saw fit to bring the "AC balance" control out front as a screwdriver job. There was more than a little wisdom in the tounge-in-cheek guidance of "warm up for 40 days and 40 nights". Back whenever, FET multimeters arrived on the scene too, but these, although decent, had to make due with the semiconductor offerings of the time, and tended to be overly complex on that account. As such they never became equals of the venerable 12AU7/6AL5 based meters, owing to leakage, drift and more than a few burnouts; - and they were never really designed to be "bench" meters. Eventually Heathkit produced a set of tubesters for their VTVMs, but these came out late in their history and are unobtanium, and likewise, somewhat limited by the tech of the era and prone to failure. These limitations initiated the quest for a permanent solution to transform my VTVMs into more accurate, stable and future-proof instruments. The goal was drop-in modules which MEET or EXCEED every criteria of the VTVM; Accuracy, stability, bandwidth, resilience from burnout, and which require NO MODIFICATIONS to the meter. (I try not to butcher test equipment, because one guy's "custom improvement" is another's haywired hodgepodge.) Given the vast array of semiconductor topologies available now, I realised we could do this, do it right, and do it better. The project began with my trusty old RCA WR-87A Master VoltOhmyst, and the result was everything one could hope to expect. It's stayed in cal ever since (2 years as of this writing), remains pretty much at zero when powered up day after day;- I find it rarely necessary to ever touch the zero knob - yay! After discussions with acquaintances, we began getting requests for such an upgrade. It seemed potentially worth the effort and expense, since every decent & reasonably priced VTVM I see on the e-place seems to find a new owner, but it meant designing modules which would function in any VTVM of the basic 12AU7/6AL5 genre. At first blush, these "all roughly look the same" circuit-wise, but there's 2 fundamental areas of variation. First, the 12AU7 electrometer will be either a balanced cathode-follower, or a "long-tail" amp, wherein the movement is across the anodes of a cathode-coupled pair. NB, even if you're only reading this for amusement, pay careful attention to your cathode resistors if you have the long-tail circuit, as most producers used carbon-comp for those, and they're actually rather critical since they set the amp's overall gain. We recommend replacing them with either precision if u got, or at least high grade film of 2 or 5% tolerance. The other variation between designs is the nominal operating current of the triodes, and from studying an extensive variety of examples, determined this to be anywhere between 500uA and 3mA per. It's relevant because though electron tubes *tend* to be "voltage" amps, all semi's *tend* to be "current" devices, i.e., transconductance doesn't vary much with operating current (which also makes the meter far less sensitive to line voltage fluctuation, an added bonus). So these were some challenges to realizing a universal upgrade, but met with careful design. What's offered in this listing is the result. These modules will replace the tubes in any meter of this most popular genre. (there are 2 exceptions, the Hickok 470A owing to an AC bandwidth issue from the factory, but we offer a compensated version of the 12AU7 module specifically for the 470A - See my other listings; and the PACO 88/98. The PACO's can use these however with a zero potentiometer move. - msg me for details)For some later VTVMs designed with solid state AC detection instead of a 6AL5, we also offer the 12AU7 module alone, see my other listings. (also for meters with an EA52 in the probe. Sorry, not tackling EA52s - yet.) Also offered is a kit with 2 6AL5 replacements for RCA WR-87A and a few others which also use a 6AL5 as the B+ rectifier. The 6AL5 upgrade modules are suitable in that service also, since a VTVM B supply current is less than 10mA or so. Our solid-state 6AL5s are engineered to read true down to 10s of millivolts like the 6AL5s they replace... It's noteworthy **because just throwing a pair of diodes in, will result considerable scale error on the lowest ranges**. Such has been offered as an "upgrade" by others, and it works poorly for this reason. You see in the pix an array of VTVMs which utilise our solid-state modules. I don't collect meters per se, most of them were acquired for performance evaluation during the design phase, with examples incorporating the broadest range of circuit variants mentioned above. The "production test platform" meters happen to be reconstituted Heathkits which were too abused for adoption.These modules all have gold plated pins for reliability. They're also guaranteed, replacement for no more than the return postage - regardless of circumstances... Instructions included.
