Up for sale here is this complete rebuild kit for the Pioneer SX-1980. This includes all the parts you need to rebuild a Pioneer SX-1980, and includes the correct size replacement main filter capacitors. This does not include new lights, fuses, or any resistors. This also does not include the driver or output transistors. Please don’t buy any of the Chinese output transistors on eBay–those are counterfeit and may blow up. I also have a complete incandescent light kit available here, and a complete LED light kit here. This kit includes replacements for all the electrolytic and tantalum capacitors in the receiver, including the four main filter capacitors, which are replaced with 3-inch 24000 uf 100v Chemi-Con caps, which were Made in USA in 2021 or 2022. The new caps are the same diameter as the old ones so they will fit the old clamps perfectly. There are four 2.2 uf 250v Panasonic film bypass capacitors included as well. The kit also includes replacements for almost all the transistors on all the boards, except there are only replacements for Q1-12 on the driver boards–the others don’t generally need replacing. Also, the FETs and tuner board transistors are not replaced. The kit for the power supply includes replacement diodes and zener diodes, which are important to replace, and there are two new Omron relays included. D212/D213 (35v zeners) on the power supply board are replaced with 17v and 18v zeners in series–this is more stable than the original. Also, the new soft-start relay will require you to remove resistor R102 and run a jumper wire from one capacitor to one R102 terminal. You will also receive detailed instructions to help this rebuild go more smoothly. These are all high-quality brand new genuine parts, the same parts I use when I rebuild Pioneer equipment. I have rebuilt quite a few of the big Pioneers over the last few years. The SX-1980 is often considered Pioneer’s best receiver, and it deserves a high-quality rebuild. Capacitors are Nichicon PW, Nichicon KL, Panasonic FC, Wima film, Panasonic film, one Supertech axial, two Vishay axials, and Chemi-Con for the main filters. Transistors are Fairchild/Onsemi and a few Toshiba. Trimmers are new Bourns trimmers, and VR1/2 on the amp boards is replaced with a 200k multi-turn. There are four mini adapter boards and four SMD dual transistors to replace the two 2SA798s and two 2SA979s. You will need to assemble these, so you’ll need either a very fine-point soldering iron tip and very thin solder, or you’ll need SMD-working equipment. Or you can skip that step. Brand new, correct size main filter capacitorsBypass caps for the main filter capsAn extremely detailed power supply kit, with replacements for all the zener diodesThe proper axial capacitors for the power supply boardA full recap kit for the tuner board–no skipping that one! Proper capacitor values, even the weird ones like the 6.8 uf and .56 uf caps on the tuner boardBoth relays are included. Otherwise, eventually the soft-start relay can go bad, and your Pioneer will blow the thermal fuse when this happens.Replacements for almost all transistors (except some amp board transistors, tuner board transistors, and FETS). There are a lot of bad transistors in the 1980, and they desperately need replacing. No one else is as obsessed with replacing transistors as I am, and no one else includes replacements for as many transistors. Your receiver will sound so much better with those ancient 2SC869s and 2SA726s gone.The proper low-leakage caps are included. There are loads of Nichicon KL and Wima film caps in this kit, which are necessary for a correct rebuild. New Bourns trimmers for the amp boardsReplacements for the 2SA798s and 2SA979s on the amp boards and flat amp boardSurprisingly detailed and well-written instructions, plus a link to download a free service manualThe Pioneer SX-1980 has a LOT more parts in it than a typical vintage stereo receiver. This kit includes a total of 242 parts, which is more than most of the kits I sell. This will be a long, slow rebuild. The parts for each board are individually bagged for ease of installation, and the instructions will tell you how the transistors and diodes go in, but there are a LOT of parts to replace here, so if you do not have a lot of experience with vintage gear I would not recommend starting with this one. You should know what you’re doing and have a good soldering iron, a desoldering gun such as a Hakko FR-301, heat-sink compound, and a dim-bulb tester with 100W or 150W incandescent bulb. Just FYI, a lot of folks will replace the entire power supply board with a completely new redesigned board, available on eBay from another seller (just search for SX-1980 power supply). If you are doing that, you obviously won’t need the power supply kit from this rebuild kit, so I have a listing for the SX-1980 rebuild kit minus the power supply kit available here.
