YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED!!** I AM PUTTING UP FOR AUCTION, MANY OF OUR TREASURES THAT WE HAVE COLLECTED OVER OUR YEARS TOGETHER THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PRECIOUS TO US – IN THIS CASE . . .AN ANTIQUE AMPHORA ART POTTERY VASE w/applied fruit, JOSEF STRNACT, back stamped with the Strnacht Pottery stamp from Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (Austria).I remember this vase from when I was a child, & its place was on a high, obscure shelf in the kitchen. Whenever I asked why it sat in such a lost place in the house, my mother, Irma, would always tell me that it wasn’t a very pretty vase, so it didn’t belong out with some of her other “more beautiful” porcelain. Little did she know of it’s history nor the fact that some of that other “more beautiful” porcelain had the same history. It is “Amphora”, & while you may know Amphora as a type of large two-handled Grecian vase originally designed for storage, the name Amphora also refers to art pottery produced in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia & which ushered in the Art Nouveau style. The movement is more shrouded in mystery than other art movement from the same era; however, before I get into history, let me tell you about this “ANTIQUE AMPHORA ART POTTERY VASE w/applied fruit” about which I have always been intrigued.The artist is Josef Strnact, Jr. & this vase is part of his “Autumn Series” of garden pieces, pattern 15. The Strnact pottery, which employed more than 300 people in 1910, was founded by Josef Strnact, Jr., in 1881 in the former Austrian town of Turn-Teplitz, about 25 miles south of Dresden, Germany. The terra-cotta, majolica, & faience produced by this factory were instant successes because of the pottery’s wide product range. It included faience & majolica vases, garden pieces like flowerpots & pillars, umbrella stands, tobacco jars, & mantel-clock casings. It also made weaved & open-worked stoneware, like baskets & flower receptacles. The Company also produced terra-cotta wall plaques & letters for signage.The detail on this piece is fantastic . . . the branches slightly bending with the weight of luscious ripe fruit, leaves looking like fall has arrived & frost has been around. The ripe grapes, with a blush of light red, are ready to be picked & eaten or crushed into juice for the wine maker. The JS shield outline found on this vase is from the Strnact Pottery of Turn-Teplitz & is one of a variety of marks that were printed on, or impressed into the clay in raised relief.Art Nouveau, as its name suggests, was the first truly new style of the modern era that did not look to the past for inspiration. The Art Nouveau style was based on natural forms rather than architecture, employing organic curves, floral design, & the feminine. The style was short lived, flourishing between about 1890 & 1910 throughout Europe & the United States. Variations of it were found in Germany, where it was called “Jugendstil”, “Sezessionstil” in Austria, & “Stile Floreale” in Italy.APPRECIATING THE ERA & UNDERSTANDING THE MOVEMENT: The presently understood chronology goes something like this: On September 1, 1892, the Firm of Riessner, Stellmacher, & Kessel was formed at Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (not too far from Dresden, Germany). It must be understood that the partnership was formed because each partner contributed his own important element relative to the ceramics process, & the next year at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, the newly formed Firm was awarded top honors for the items exhibited.For a variety of reasons, the partnership did not stay together, & by 1905, Stellmacher had broken away from the Firm & had formed his own pottery, which lasted until 1912. Upon his leaving, the original firm was renamed Riessner & Kessel Amphora Works. Again, the partnership of two split with Kessel leaving in 1910. Hans Riessner continued as sole proprietor after 1911 when his brother passed away, & the Firm became known as Amphora Werke Riessner.The Amphora movement also produced delicate Art Nouveau Pottery. An important series from one remarkable decade features plants, flowers, fruits, animals (snakes, brightly plumed birds, bats), mythical creatures & dragons, biomorphic designs, & simulated jewels. Many of its artists created designs that echoed the highly ornamental paintings of their contemporaries, including Gustav Klimt & Alphonse Mucha.During the early 20th Century, Bohemia was part of the fading Austrian-Hungarian empire. Amphora pieces reflected the finest of craftsmanship, the most delicate of detailing, & incorporated nature-inspired Art Nouveau themes. It was sold in the United States by finer decorating shops including Louis Comfort Tiffany, who appreciated the innovative, hand crafted designs, vibrant colors, & unique glazes used by the Amphora manufacturers from Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia; now the town of Trovany, Czechoslovakia.Each piece we find today was designed by someone, & most of the time, we will never know the name of the person. In all probability, each piece started with a piece of paper, pencil, & watercolor. After the design was completed to the satisfaction of the artist, it was given a number, & we assume that numbers found on the underside of most Amphora today correspond to a form & decoration design on a piece of paper, probably long gone. One of the missing links is the form & decor books . . . fires, wars, Communism . . . all must have had a part in losing this important bridge to the past. Without these documents, we can only admire the existing Amphora & wonder who or what type of person created these marvels in clay.MEASUREMENTS: Diameter = 5″Height = 10.5″Weight = 1 lb 11 ozWhile this lovely “ANTIQUE AMPHORA ART POTTERY VASE w/applied fruit” has a few superficial rubs & a small chip in the left applied leaf, the vase is in EXCELLENT antique condition!! A REMARKABLE FIND FOR ANY COLLECTOR OF ANTIQUE PORCELAIN!!PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT EVERYTHING IN MY SHOP INVENTORY IS COMPRISED OF ITEMS THAT JOHN & I HAVE COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS – NOT ACQUIRED FROM AN AUCTION OR AN ESTATE!
