This is the 1932 Massachusetts Institute of Technology yearbook. It features Dr. Samuel Wesley Stratton, physicist,and appointed by President McKinley to be the first director of the National Bureau of Standards. According to Wikipedia, William Wesley Stratton (1861-1931) worked his way through the University of Illinois, receiving his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1884. He became an instructor in mathematics and physics following his graduation, and in 1889, when the Physics department head failed to return to campus after the summer vacation, Stratton was appointed head. As Physics head, Stratton organized a formal curriculum in electrical engineering, which was taught in the Physics Department until a separate department of electrical engineering was established. Stratton joined the newly established University of Chicago in 1892, rising in academic rank to full professor. In 1923, he became the eighth president of MIT. France made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and he received honorary degrees from theUniversity of Cambridge and Yale University. Photos of Stratton are on pages 11, 12, 13, 14, 1nd 15. Wikipedia states that Isabel Ebel (1908-1992) was the first woman student at MIT and NYU studying aeronautical engineering.Her photo appears on page 68. She was a member of the Women’s Rifle Team and Cleofan Society. Ebel earned her aeronautical engineering at MIT in 1932. She assisted Amelia Earhart when she was planning one of her record-breaking flights. Ebel continued her study at New York University. It was said that she was only accepted because Earhart interceded with the admission staff on her behalf. In 1939 war broke out in Europe and she gained a job at the Grumman Aircraft Corporation where she helped with several aircraft but in particular the Grumman XF5F Skyrocket. Lawrence Charles Henry Berkwitz (1908-1995) is pictured on page 60. He was the founder of the Berklee College of Music, a composer and arranger, and educator.He graduated from MIT in 1932 with a degree in architectural engineering. It appears that at some time, he changed his name to Lawrence Berk. Katherine Sarabia appears in several photos in the yearbook, including one as the Secretary of the Sedgwick Biological Society (page 317) and as a member of the graduating class (page 93). Katherine Sarabia was also president of the MIT Cleofan Society. The yearbook is in very good condition. Hinges are not cracked, no missing pages, no writing in the book. It measures 12″ x 9.25″x 1.25″. There are 390 pages in total, including advertisements. The cover is tan cloth, with “TECHNIQUE 1932” in dark brown letters on the front cover.
