You are bidding on a rare antique set of hardcover books titled Practical Education. By Maria and R. L. Edgeworth. This is just the Second Edition of this popular work. Printed in London for J. Johnson, St. Paul’s Church-Yard, by F. Crowder, Warwick-Square, 1801. Has two fold-out illustrations in Volume II. Imagine, this set is over 200 years old!! Maria Edgeworth and her father Robert Lovell Edgeworth collaborated in writing the most significant educational work of the eighteenth-century. Building upon Rousseau’s Emile, the authors stress the importance of interesting, creative and enjoyable learning. Like Locke, the Edgeworths also emphasize the educational value of play. As a forerunner of Feminism, Anglo-Irish writer Maria Edgeworth occupies an important place in the history of women’s writing. A pioneer of social realism, her novels represent a significant contribution to the literature of class, race and gender. Born at Black Bourton, Oxfordshire she spent her early years with her mother’s family in England, until her mother’s death when Maria was five & she joined her father at his estate in County Longford, Ireland. Two years later she was sent to schools in Derby & London but returned again to Ireland at the age of 14 & was was home-tutored in law, Irish economics and politics, science, and literature by her father. Maria Edgeworth strove for the self-realization of women and stressed the importance of the individual. She also wanted greater participation in politics by middle class women. Maria and her father, who held progressive ideas on education, particularly on the shortcomings of female education, began a lifelong academic collaboration as evidenced in this work which combines the ideas of Locke and Rousseau with scientific inquiry. Maria Edgeworth asserts that “learning should be a positive experience and that the discipline of education is more important during the formative years than the acquisition of knowledge.” The system attempted to “adapt both the curriculum and methods of teaching to the needs of the child; the endeavour to explain moral habits and the learning process through associationism; and most important, the effort to entrust the child with the responsibility for his own mental culture.” The ultimate goal of Edgeworth’s system was to create an independent thinker who understands the consequences of their actions. Condition: Books feature full leather binding with titling in gold on leather spine labels. However, much of the leather labels have perished. The covers are relatively well attached despite the fact that there are a few areas along the gutter where the leather is gone. The covers have gilt design around perimeters. The corners are worn through. All pages are clean and tightly bound with just very little, scattered foxing. The fold-out illustration in Volume II has a soil mark at the bottom of the fold. Books have decorative endpages. No writing in books and no signs of previous ownership. Books shows wear but remain in good condition. A very rare and early set of important work on the education of children. This is a terrific set to add to a collection. Great gift idea.
